Launched January 1, 2012, Bank on Virginia Beach is a partnership of local banks, credit unions, community organizations, and the City of Virginia Beach committed to increasing the financial stability of low to middle income families. One of several financial empowerment strategies developed within the city’s 2010 Mayor’s Action Challenge initiative, 500 Families Financially Fit for the Future; Bank on Virginia Beach is designed to connect unbanked and under-banked households to traditional financial services and provide them with alternatives to expensive financial transactions. Bank on Virginia Beach takes a strategic approach to helping families build financial strength: • Products: Banks and Credit Unions offer an array of banking services with varying fees to help participants select the account that is right for them. • Education: A series of 6-8 classes, meeting monthly, provides participants the information needed to work within the traditional banking system and to build financial assets. • Mentoring: A personal banker or credit union partner is available to guide participants each step of the way ensuring they have every resource needed to successfully maintain their new account.
